KAS Mains Syllabus 2026 — Complete Subject-Wise Syllabus, Pattern & Marks

Everything a KAS aspirant needs to plan Mains preparation: paper-wise marks, section-wise topics, and a practical way to work through all of it.

Clearing KAS Prelims only earns you a seat at the real test. The Mains examination is where preparation depth, writing practice and time management decide the outcome — five consecutive days of descriptive papers that leave very little room for gaps in the syllabus. This page lays out the complete KAS Mains syllabus for 2026, paper by paper, along with the exam pattern and a preparation approach Himalaigroup uses with its own Mains batches.

KAS Mains Exam Pattern 2026
The KAS Mains exam is conducted offline by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and is entirely descriptive. Candidates may write their answers in Kannada or English. The exam is structured as follows:

Qualifying Papers — Kannada and English, 150 marks each, 2 hours per paper. A minimum of 35% is required in each to qualify; these marks are not added to the final merit score.

  • Essay Paper — 250 marks, 3 hours, divided into two sections (details below).
  • General Studies Papers I–IV — 250 marks each, 3 hours per paper.
  • Personality Test (Interview) — 25 marks, conducted after the written stage for candidates who clear Mains.
  • Total marks for the written papers add up to 1250, with the personality test taking the overall selection score to 1275.

Rules around optional subjects have changed across past KAS notifications. Always cross-check the current year’s official KPSC notification for the final paper structure before finalising your preparation plan.

KAS Mains Syllabus — Overview
The Mains syllabus spans six broad areas: the Language qualifying paper, the Essay paper, and General Studies Papers I through IV. GS1 covers History and Culture; GS2 covers Geography, the Constitution and Administration; GS3 covers Science, Agriculture and Environment; and GS4 covers Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude. Each is detailed below, broken into the sections KPSC itself uses, rather than a single long list of topics.

Language Paper Syllabus (Kannada / English)
The Language paper tests functional command of the chosen language at a foundational level rather than literary depth. It typically includes:

  • Comprehension of given passages
  • Précis writing
  • Vocabulary and usage
  • Short essay writing
  • Translation from English to the Indian language (and vice versa, where applicable)
  • General communication skills

Because these are qualifying papers, many candidates under-prepare for them and lose time later re-attempting the exam. Himalaigroup treats the Language paper as a fixed weekly practice block through the course, not an afterthought.

Essay Paper Syllabus

The Essay paper carries 250 marks and is split into two sections, each worth 125 marks:

  • Section 1 — Topics of National or International Importance
  • Section 2 — Topics of State and Regional (Karnataka) Importance

Candidates choose one topic from each section. Structure, argument coherence and balanced perspective matter as much as content — a well-organised average-knowledge essay routinely outscores a fact-heavy but poorly structured one.

Optional Subject Papers

Some past KAS notifications have included optional subject papers alongside the compulsory General Studies papers. Because this requirement has varied between notifications, treat it as provisional until the current year’s official KPSC notification confirms it. Himalaigroup’s course advisors track each year’s notification closely and will guide enrolled candidates on optional subject choice and strategy the moment it is confirmed.

How to Prepare for the KAS Mains Syllabus

Knowing the syllabus is the easy part — converting it into exam-ready answers under time pressure is where most candidates lose marks. A structured approach matters more here than in Prelims:

  • Write from day one. Reading the syllabus is not preparation; answer writing practice against a timer is.
  • Section-wise revision cycles. Revisit each GS section on a fixed rotation rather than moving linearly through the syllabus once.
  • Evaluate, don’t just attempt. A test only helps if the answers are reviewed against model structure, not just marked for factual accuracy.
  • Treat the Language paper seriously. A failed qualifying paper disqualifies an otherwise strong GS performance.
  • Track writing speed. Five papers across five days is as much a stamina test as a knowledge test.

This is the structure behind Himalaigroup’s Mains program: full-length classes across GS1–GS4, Essay and Ethics, over 100 written tests with individual evaluation, and answer-writing drills aimed specifically at speed and structure rather than volume of notes. Classes are available in both Kannada and English medium, with study material, current affairs coverage and test series provided in the candidate’s chosen language.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KAS Mains exam objective or descriptive?

KAS Mains is entirely descriptive. Unlike Prelims, there are no multiple-choice questions — every paper requires written answers, essays or structured responses.

How many papers are there in KAS Mains?

At minimum: two qualifying Language papers (Kannada and English), one Essay paper, and General Studies Papers I through IV — six papers in total, plus the Personality Test. Optional subject papers may apply depending on the current notification.

What is the minimum qualifying mark for the Language paper?

Candidates must score at least 35% in each Language qualifying paper. These marks do not count towards the final merit ranking, but failing to clear this threshold disqualifies the candidate regardless of GS performance.

Can I write the KAS Mains exam in Kannada?

Yes. Candidates can choose to answer the General Studies and Essay papers in either Kannada or English. Himalaigroup runs a dedicated Kannada-medium track with study material, classes and test series in Kannada.

HIMALAI IAS & KAS PRELIMS CSAT NOTES-1

Read below given Passage

Accountability, or the lack of it, in governance generally, and civil services, in particular, is a major factor underlying the deficiencies in governance and public administration. Designing an effective framework for accountability has been a key element of the reform agenda. A fundamental issue is whether civil services should be accountable to the political executive of the day or to society at large. In other words, how should internal and external accountability be reconciled? Internal accountability is sought to be achieved by internal performance monitoring, official supervision by bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission and Comptroller and Auditor General, and judicial review of executive decisions. Articles 311 and 312 of the Indian Constitution provide job security and safeguards to the civil services, especially the All India Services. The framers of the Constitution had envisaged that provision of these safeguards would result in a civil service that is not totally subservient to the political executive but will have the strength to function in larger public interest. The need to balance internal and external accountability is thus built into the Constitution. The issue is where to draw the line. Over the years, the emphasis seems to have tilted in favour of greater internal accountability of the civil services to the political leaders of the day who in turn are expected to be externally accountable to the society at large through the election process. This system for seeking accountability to society has not worked out, and has led to several adverse consequences for governance.

Some special measures can be considered for improving accountability in civil services. Provisions of articles 311 and 312 should be reviewed and laws and regulations framed to ensure external accountability of civil services. The proposed Civil Services Bill seeks to address some of these requirements. The respective roles of professional civil services and the political executive should be defined so that professional managerial functions and management of civil services are depoliticized. For this purpose, effective statutory civil service boards should be created at the centre and in the states. Decentralization and devolution of authority to bring government and decision making closer to the people also helps to enhance accountability.

1. According to the passage, which of the following factor/factors led to the adverse consequences for governance/public administration ?

1. Inability of civil services to strike a balance between internal and external accountabilities
