GS MAINS PAPER I PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTION ANSWER BY HIMALAI KESHAV SIR FOR IAS, IPS, KAS EXAMS
Ashokan Inscriptions
- Earliest Royal Records – Ashokan inscriptions are the earliest large body of deciphered royal records in India and give direct evidence about Ashoka and the Mauryan Empire.
- Kalinga War – They describe Ashoka’s remorse after the Kalinga War and his shift towards Dhamma-vijaya (conquest through morality).
- Extent of Empire – Inscriptions found from Shahbazgarhi and Mansehra in the northwest to Brahmagiri and Sannati in the south show the wide reach of Mauryan rule.
- Administration – Officials such as Mahamatras, Rajukas and Yuktas show the existence of an organised administrative system.
- Welfare Measures – Ashoka mentions wells, roads, medicinal facilities and planting of trees, showing concern for public welfare.
- Social Values – The edicts promote respect for elders, humane treatment of servants and kindness to living beings.
- Religious Tolerance – Ashoka encouraged respect and tolerance among different religious groups.
- Ashoka and Buddhism – The inscriptions show Ashoka’s association with Buddhism, while his Dhamma was a broader ethical policy, not simply Buddhist teaching.
- Bhabru Edict – The Bhabru Edict is important evidence of Ashoka’s personal commitment to Buddhism.
- Economic and Tax Policies – The Rummindei Pillar Inscription records tax concessions for Lumbini, showing state involvement in local economic matters.
- Foreign Relations – References to Hellenistic rulers show that the Mauryan Empire had diplomatic contacts beyond India.
- Language, Script and Art – The inscriptions use Prakrit, Greek and Aramaic and scripts such as Brahmi and Kharosthi; Ashokan pillars also demonstrate advanced Mauryan stone craftsmanship.
- Limitations – Since they are royal proclamations, they mainly present Ashoka’s official viewpoint. They give limited information about everyday life, taxation, economic production and military organisation, so they should be combined with archaeological and literary evidence.
